NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE TEACHER
The end of the year is fast approaching, and the sun is finally shining consistently! With warmer temperatures come insects, so please remember to apply insect spray as needed prior to your outdoor activities. Also, it is essential that you stay hydrated with lots of water during these hot days-remember our Health class hydration lesson tips, and make your own water bottle! Finally, we all need to apply sunscreen to our largest organ of our body systems-our skin! Below is some helpful information from http://kidshealth.org regarding sun safety. Get out and enjoy the fresh air!
- Use sunscreen with an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Put sunscreen on 15-20 minutes before going out in the sun. The letters “SPF” stand for “sun protection factor” ,and the number rating tells you how many minutes you can stay in the sun without getting sunburned.
- Reapply sunscreen often, and more often if you have been swimming or are sweating-even if the sunscreen is waterproof. And, remember that you can get sunburned more quickly when you are swimming or boating because the reflection from the water makes the sun’s rays stronger.
- Be sure to apply sunscreen all over your body. This includes some places you may not think of, like the tops of your ears, the back of your neck, the part in your hair, your face, and the tops of your feet. You may need help reaching these places-ask your parent or caregiver to assist you. If you want to block the sun’s rays, wear clothing that you can’t see your hand through. You may still get burned through sheer fabrics. Wear a baseball cap or other fun hat to block your face from the sun.
Don’t forget that your eyes need protection from the ultraviolet rays, too. Always wear sunglasses in the sun, and make sure they have a label that says they block UV rays. Stay safe and healthy!
