Second grade math instruction is based upon the Common Core State Standards in mathematics. In Grade 2, instruction will focus on four critical areas: (1) extending understanding of base-ten notation; (2) building fluency with addition and subtraction; (3) using standard units of measure; and (4) describing and analyzing shapes. Grade 2 Overview Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.

Relate addition and subtraction to length.
Work with time and money.
Represent and interpret data.
Reason with shapes and their attributes.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
