In Unit 4.2.2, Adding and Subtracting Fractions, students build off previous knowledge of adding and subtracting whole numbers to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. We do this by composing fractions using unit fractions, for example, 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8. We also add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators by recognizing that a mixed number is made up of a collection of unit fractions, for example, 1 1/2 = 1/2 + 1/2 + 1/2.
