  • New Unit and Parent Newsletter

We have now started Unit 4.3.3: Comparing Fractions and Decimals! In this unit, students get their first opportunity to explore decimal numbers through their relationship to fractions. Students will locate decimals in tenths and hundredths on a number line. They will also compare decimal numbers using area models, decimal grids, numbers lines, and meter sticks. Through these experiences, students understand that comparisons between fractions and decimals are only valid when the whole is the same. Check out the new Parent Newsletter in the Files Section below for more information and links on activities you can do at home!…

  • New Unit and Parent Newsletter!

We are starting our new unit on multiplying fractions by a whole number. Please check out the new parent newsletter in the Files Section as well as a new Homework Helper! In Unit 4.3.2, students extend their understanding of multiplication and multiply a fraction by a whole number. Students use repeated addition, area models, number lines, and partial products to prove why their answer is reasonable.…

  • New Unit 4.3.1 and Parent Newsletter!

In Unit 4.3.1, Understanding Division with Remainders, students first use the inverse relationship between multiplication and division to help solve division problems. Students then learn new strategies such as Using Partitioning and Division to Help Divide and the Partial Quotients Strategy to divide larger numbers. Having a strong foundation in place value, the properties of operations, and the inverse relationship is key to student understanding of division in this unit. Check out the Parent Newsletter in the Files Section below for more tips and tricks about this unit!…

  • Unit 4.2.3 and Homework Helper!

In Unit 4.2.3, students learn to multiply 2-digit by up to 4-digit numbers together. Students decompose numbers according to place value to make easier multiplication equations. They investigate different patterns to find rules and justify if their answers are reasonable. Students then apply this new skill in real world settings. Ask your child about the area model they use to multiply multi-digit numbers! Please check the Files Section below to find the new Homework Helper and Parent Newsletter for this unit!…

  • New Unit and Parent Newsletter!

Please look below at the new Adding and Subtracting Fractions Homework Helpers and a new Parent Newsletter!   In Unit 4.2.2, Adding and Subtracting Fractions, students build off previous knowledge of adding and subtracting whole numbers to add and subtract fractions with like denominators. We do this by composing fractions using unit fractions, for example, 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8. We also add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators by recognizing that a mixed number is made up of a collection of unit fractions, for example, 1 1/2 = 1/2 + 1/2 +…

  • New Math Unit 4.2.1!

In Unit 4.2.1: Comparing Fractions, 4th graders are using visual models to compare fractions as well as find equivalent fractions. Students are able to explain why two fractions are equivalent, and why the number and size of the parts differ, but the fractions are the same size. Ask your child about ways that they can find equivalent fractions! Please check out the Files Section below to find a new Parent Newsletter and a new Homework…

  • Unit 3!

In Unit 3, Exploring Multiplication and Division through Problem Solving, students build on multiplication and division strategies previously learned. We begin with discovering the relationship between factors and multiples. Using this understanding, we develop strategies to multiply and divide multi-digit numbers. By applying these strategies to real world problems, students have a better understanding of the tasks.   For a more in depth look at Unit 4.1.3, please visit the Parent Newsletters Folder under the Files Section of our Fusion Page. This document provides vocabulary, the Common Core Connection, examples, mathematical models, and resources to help at home! Check it…

  • Our First Math Unit!

We have begun our first 4th grade math unit! In this unit, students will extend their understanding of our place value system. We build off our understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones from third grade, to develop an understanding of thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, and millions. We will read and write numbers to 1,000,000 using numerals, number names, and expanded form. Ask your child to show you the different ways we can represent numbers with 6 digits! For a more in depth look at Unit 4.1.1, please visit the Parent Newsletters folder under the Files Section of our Fusion Page. This document provides vocabulary, the common core connection, examples, mathematical models, and resources to help at home! Check it…
