  • Week of 12/10-12/14

    Hello ELL Families, 

    The Holiday Shop begins on Tuesday, December 11, and continues through Friday, December 14.  Notifications were sent home last week.

    ACCESS Testing, the state mandated assessment for English Language Proficiency, will begin on Monday, January 7, and continue through Friday, February 15.

    Holiday recess is from Saturday, December 22, until Tuesday, January 1.  Students will return to school on Wednesday, January 2.

    Thursday, December 6, is an early release day. 

    The Holiday Shop is scheduled for December 12-15.  Flyers are going home this week.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Report cards will be going home on Wednesday, November 21.

    Here are some additional  notices from the parent liaison.

     
    Thanksgiving Break - Please remember that Wednesday, November 21 is a half day with dismissal at 12:00. There is no school on Thursday or Friday.
     
    After School Programs - The Karate and Lacrosse programs will begin this Monday, November 19 from 3:30-4:30 and run for 5 weeks. Both programs are currently full. We hope to offer more programs in the new year. 
     
    Picture Retake Day - Friday, November 30, for those students that would like a retake of their original photo, simply return your original photo package on Friday, November 30 and have a new picture taken. For students who missed our first picture day, you may order online at www.mylifetouch.com or request an order form through Springbrook's main office.
     
    November PTO meeting - Please join us on Monday, November 26 at 6:30 in the library.

  • Hello ELL Families,

    On Friday, November 2, the students and faculty at Springbriook Elementary School enjoyed the storytelling of Ms. Leeny Del Seamonds.  She came to share her stories and teach students more about The Day of the Dead which was on Friday.

    This week is a short week as students and faculty have the day off tomorrow for Election Day, November 6.

    Parent/teacher conferences are Tuesday, November 13.  If you haven't scheduled your conference, you may want to soon.

  • Hello ELL Families,

    There are only a few events happening this week.

    October 20, Trunk or Treat will be held at Springbrook Elementary School at 5:00 p.m.  If your family is decorating a truck, please arrive at 4:15 p.m.  This is a rain or shine event.

    Fall Share Assembly will be on Thursday, October 25 at 9:30 a.m. The assembly will feature third and fourth graders.   This assembly is only for the parents of third and fourth graders due to parking concerns and the gymnasium capacity. 

    Tuesday, October 30, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., there will be a flu clinic at Springbrook.  Please bring your insurance card.  You can pre-register at www.schoolflu.com.

    October is a busy month at Springbrook!  Here are some of the  upcoming events.

    Trunk or Treat:  Saturday, October 20 at 5:00  p.m.

  • Hello ELL Families,

    On Thursday, October 4, there will be  an early dismissal at 2:00 p.m.

    The Columbus Day Parade is on Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m.  Westerly Elementary School students may march in the parade.  Permission slips need to be returned to school by Wednesday, October 3.  Students need to be accompanied by an adult.

    BOKS starts on Monday, October 1 at 7:45 a.m.

    The membership forms for BJ's need to be in by Monday, October 1 for the BJ's Fundraiser.

    The Box Tops Challenge begins on Monday, October 1 and runs until Friday, October 12.

    Trunk or Treat at Springbrook Elementary School is on Saturday, October 20, at 5:00 p.m.  There will be Trick or Treating in the parking lot followed by a showing of "It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"in the gym.

    It was great to see you all last night at Open House.  The children are all off to such a wonderful start to the 2018-2019 school year!

    There are a few events and reminders this week.

    On September 24 at Tower Street Community Center, the Moon Festival is being celebrated from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

    Picture Day is September 28.

    The BOKS program is still open for registration.

    The Box Tops Challenge will begin in  October.

    On Thursday, September 27, downtown Westerly will shutdown for Bricks and Murals from 5:30-10:00 p.m.

    On Saturday, October 20 at 5:00 p.m., the PTO will host a Trunk or Treat at Springbrook Elementary School.

    2) Springbrook Open House - Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 6:00 - 7:00 pm
     
    3) Background Checks for School Year 2018 - 2019 - Background checks for the 2018 - 2019 school year are effective from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019.  To get a leg up on the upcoming school year, complete the process as early as July 1, 2018!  If you have already done a background check in the last two years, you only have to fill out the Criminal Release form and submit that to the Westerly Police Station.  If you have not completed the background ever or it has been over two years, then you will need to complete the two online forms with the Westerly Public Schools and the Criminal Release Form.  I have attached the instructions on how to access these forms.  If you have any questions or need assistance with this process, please contact Laura Locke at llocke@westerly.k12.ri.us or by calling (401) 348-2296.
     
    4) Box Tops winner! - Mrs. Wright's class has won this last Box Tops Challenge for this school year! Congratulations!  They will receive a pizza party compliments of the PTO.  A tremendous thank you goes out to Kristen Daniewicz for being the Box Tops Coordinator and counting all those submissions!

     Funny4Funds Comedy Night PTO Fundraiser! - Friday, June 1st, 2018, Westerly Elks Lodge, 1 Dixon Street, Westerly.   You can still purchase tickets at the door tonight! This is our last fundraiser of the school year and we NEED your support!  Join the PTOs from Dunn's Corners, State Street and Springbrook Schools for a Night of Comedy and a Great Cause! 

     
    2) The Chorus of Westerly Kids' Open Rehearsal and Ice Cream Social - Monday, June 4th from 5:00 - 6:30 pm OR Tuesday, June 5th from 4:14 - 5:45 pm at the George Kent Performance Hall, 119 High Street, Westerly, RIAny children, age 8 and up are welcome to attend and learn more about the Chorus of Westerly.  An INFORMATION SESSION for Singers & Parents will follow the rehearsal and we'll learn more about summer camp and next season while we eat ice cream!!!  Bring a friend or two!     4) Savoy Bookshop Saturday Story hour, Saturday, June 9th at 11:00 am - Join us for a special Savoy Story Hour featuring bestselling author and comedian Michael Ian Black and celebrated illustrator Debbie Ridpath Ohi reading from their new book I'M SAD, starring a girl, a potato, and a very sad flamingo.  A portion of the book sales will be donated to Opening Doors for Westerly Children.  Please see the attached flyer.

    6) Renaissance Camp - Westerly's original STEAM Camp for children entering Grades K-8.  Camp location is St. Pius X School, Westerly.  Provided by the MathhelpER+.  The dates for the camp have been updated with Westerly School District's last day being on Tuesday, June 26.  All other schools that finish the week before will still have the original dates offered.  The options are:  June 25 - June 29th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at $125.  And June 27th to June 29th from 9:00 am - 2:00 pm for $125.  *If non-Westerly families want to take advantage of the 12:00 - 2:00 pm time Wednesday, Thursday and Friday +$50.  Contact Susie Scanapieco for more information at mscanapieco@me.com or call (401) 230-9145.  See the attached flyer for more details.

    Spring is finally here!  Hope you've had the opportunity to enjoy some of this beautiful weather!

    The homework club is underway at Springbrook.  We will be meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays:  5/7, 5/9, 5/14, 5/16, 5/21, 5/30, and 6/4.

    RICAS testing has been completed at  Springbrook.  NWEA testing will begin on 5/5 and continue through 5/31.  MODEL testing will begin this week as well.

    Here are some announcements from the parent liaison at Springbrook Elementary School, Mrs Ross.

    1) Arts Night at Springbrook - Wednesday, May 9th from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.  Artwork will be displayed from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.  Music performances by Grade 3 are at 6:00 pm (report at 5:50 pm) and Grade 4 are at 7:00 pm (report at 6:50 pm).  If your third and/or fourth grade student has not RSVP on the Concert Attendance Slip to Mrs. Wagner, please do ASAP so she knows how many students will be performing.
     
    2)  Spring Picture Day - Friday, May 11th - Only students purchasing Spring pictures will be photographed and must have their completed order form when photographed or must have paid online.  Please have your student bring his/her form with him/her on Friday.

    5)  Boston Chinatown Field Trip - Saturday, May 12th, 2018.  Families are invited to attend a trip to Boston's Chinatown.  The Westerly School bus will leave Tower Street School Community Center at 8:00 am and arrive at 10:00 am in the area of 109 Lincoln Street.  Departure from the designated area near 109 Lincoln Street (C-Mart Supermarket) is at 4:00 pm and arriving back in Westerly at Tower Street School Community Center at 6:00 pm.  Cost is $5.00 per person, maximum $20 per family.  Cash or check payable to Westerly Public Schools.  Coordinators are Joan Serra and Jie Wong.  Please return your permission slip to Mrs. Wong at Springbrook School or at Tower Street School community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Please see the attached permission slip.

    7) Coastline Employee Assistance Program May Newsletter -  Coastline EAP has been providing national employee assistance services since 1985. Over 260 employers offer our services to their employees and family members across the U.S. Employees and family members can call Coastline EAP for confidential consultation or support anytime, day or night.  The articles featured this month are passive aggressive behaviour at work, asking for feedback, intercultural competence and more.  I have attached the English and Spanish newsletters.

    Kindergarten registration has begun at Springbrook Elementary School.  I look forward to meeting you and your child.

    The extra help club will begin for the ELL students at Springbrook Elementary School on May 2.  It will meet  on the following days:  5/2, 5/7, 5/9, 5/14, 5/16, 5/21, 5/30, and 6/4 from 3:15-4:30 p.m.

    ACCESS scores are expected on Tuesday, May 15.  We will be sending them home as soon as possible.

    RICAS Math Testing - Monday, April 30th and Tuesday, May 1st Grade 3 and Wednesday and Thursday, May 2nd and 3rd Grade 4 will be taking the RICAS Math test.

    2) Arts Night at Springbrook Elementary School - Wednesday, May 9th from 5:00 - 8:00 pm.  Artwork will be displayed from 5:00 - 7:00 pm.  Music performances by Grade 3 are at 6:00 pm (report at 5:50 pm) and Grade 4 are at 7:00 pm (report at 6:50 pm).  A flyer will be going home and will be in the May BUZZ coming out next week.

    4) Boston Chinatown Field Trip - Saturday, May 12th, 2018.  Families are invited to attend a trip to Boston's Chinatown.  The Westerly School bus will leave Tower Street School Community Center at 8:00 am and arrive at 10:00 am in the area of 109 Lincoln Street.  Departure from the designated area near 109 Lincoln Street (C-Mart Supermarket) is at 4:00 pm and arriving back in Westerly at Tower Street School Community Center at 6:00 pm.  Cost is $5.00 per person, maximum $20 per family.  Cash or check payable to Westerly Public Schools.  Coordinators are Joan Serra and Jie Wong.  Please return your permission slip to Mrs. Wong at Springbrook School or at Tower Street School community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Please see the attached permission slip.

    6) Wednesday Wellness Series for February - The Yale New Haven Westerly Hospital will be hosting two Wednesday Wellness events.  All programs are held in the Henry J.     • Brian Lies, an author, will visit the school.  His visit is sponsored by SES PTO. 
    • New York Times Best - Selling Author, Brian Lies, is  known for his series of bat books. His books are available for purchase at The Savoy BookShop downtown.  Mr. Lies will be available to sign books between assemblies. 
    • During Reading Workshop, Therapy Dogs will visit grades 2 and 3 and read with our students during independent reading time.

    1) S.T.E.A.M, Tuesday, April 10th from 2:00 - 7:00 pm at the WHS Ward Building - The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) is a district-wide event that showcases the unbelievable talents of our students!  This includes the Springbrook Grades 3 & 4 who will be performing African Drumming at 5 pm  and Recorder Mayhem at 6 pm.  Please see the attached flyers for more details!
     
    2) Poetry Stroll at Springbrook! - Thursday, April 12th from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.  View your child's poetry first, then stroll through any of the participating classrooms!  The poets are welcome to dress in their finest clothing for this event!
     
    3) Spring Picture Day - Friday, May 11th - Only students purchasing Spring pictures will be photographed and must have their completed order form when photographed or must have paid online.  Order forms will be sent home approximately 2 weeks before.
     
    4) Scholastic Book Fair will be Thursday, April 12 andFriday, April 13,as well as during Poetry Stroll Night, April 12.  This Book Fair is also the BOGO Book Fair!  Please check your child's backpack for the day and time that their class will be attending.
     
    5)  Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - until April 17th.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.  IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.  Help is available Monday & Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Tower Street School Community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Appointments are not needed.

    6) Opening Doors for Westerly Children Book Drive -  During the month of April, Savoy Bookshop & Café and Opening Doors for Westerly’s Children will be asking the local community to help grow a home library for a Westerly child-in-need. A visit to the Savoy Bookshop with a donation toward a new book will enter you into a raffle drawing for prizes donated by downtown Westerly businesses.  Help us inspire and encourage young readers by giving them the gift of book ownership. The children have called the books they receive from Opening Doors their FOREVER BOOKS!
     
    7) Marvel Universe Live! at the Dunkin Donuts Center - Tickets are available for either show for $23.00.  Shows are Saturday, April 28 at 11:00 am and Sunday, April 29 at 12:00 pm.  A flyer has gone home with your student, so check your child's backpack.
     
    8) Funny 4 Funds Comedy Fundraiser - Friday, May 25 at the Westerly Elks Lodge, 1 Dixon Street, Westerly. Doors open at 6:30 pm and show starting at 7:30 pm.  This fundraiser benefits all three Westerly Elementary Schools!  This is a 21+ show.  Please see the flyer that went home with your student for more details and ticket purchasing!

    On April 5 and 6, the English Language Arts portion of RICAS testing has been scheduled for third grade.  The mathematics portion is scheduled for April 30 and May 1.  For fourth grade, the RICAS English Language Arts testing will occur on April 10 and 11, and the mathematics will be on May 2 and 3.  Students have begun preparing in class for the RICAS with their teachers.

    10) Students can take college classes for FREE! - CCRI High School Enrichment Program.  Juniors may take up to two classes free each semester.  The CCRI Running Start Program offers Juniors with at least a 3.0 GPA the ability to go to CCRI full time as a Senior and earn credit for both high school and college.  New England Tech and Roger Williams offer courses through Advanced Course Network.  Johnson & Wales University Early College Enrollment - Juniors may enroll at Johnson & Wales for their Senior year.  They will earn credit for both high school and College.  This program is not free.  Have your student contact their guidance counselor for more information.

    ACCESS testing is complete!  All of the students were wonderful during this rigorous testing.  We should have the results to share in May.

    Multicultural Night at Springbrook Elementary School is scheduled for Thursday, March 8, from 5:30-7:15 p.m.  A flyer will be coming home this week.

    2) Box Tops Challenge ending Wednesday, February 14th - Continue clipping and submitting your Box Tops through this Wednesday.  The class that brings in the most Box Tops will win a pizza party compliments of the PTO!
     
    3) Kindergarten & Grade 1 Valentines/100th Day Canned Food Drive - The canned food drive will be ending this coming Wednesday, February 14th.  ** Reminder:  Please note there is a one can limit per child.
     
    4) Banking Day, Friday, February 16th at 8:30 am in the Gymnasium
     
    5) Spirit Day, Friday, February 16th - This month's spirit day dress is Teachers-vs-Students.  Role reversal!  Students dress like teachers and teachers dress like students.

    7) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - February 5th - April 17th.  The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns.  IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.  Help is available Monday & Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Tower Street School Community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Appointments not needed.  Flyers are available in the lobby of Springbrook School and on the Springbrook School Parent Liaison webpage https://ri01900035.schoolwires.net/domain/442.

  • Announcements for the Week of 2/5-2/9

    Hello ELL Families,

    ACCESS testing will begin at WHS on Monday, February 5, and continue through Wednesday, February 7. 

     Rhode Island Teachers of English Language Learners is hosting its Identity Text Gallery on April 5 at Providence College from 5-7 p.m.  An Identity Text Project affords ELL students the opportunity to explore their cultural heritage through music, art, geography, literature, holidays, traditions, customs, recipes, poetry, and much more.  All projects need to be submitted by March 15.

     Here are some announcements from the parent liaison.

     1) PTO Box Tops Challenge - The Box Tops Challenge started February 1st and is running through February 14th.  The class that brings in the most Box Tops will win a Pizza party!  Keep clipping!

      
    2) The Supper Table - Every Thursday from 4:30 - 6:30 pm.  Calabrese Club, 28 Pleasant Street, Westerly.  Families are invited for a hot, nutritious and FREE supper served in a comfortable dining environment.  Prepared weekly by guest chefs.
     
     
    3) Preschool Story time and Craft - Five sessions beginning February 7th, 9:45 - 10:45 am, Tower Street Community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Open to ages 2-4.  Children and their caregivers are invited to explore exciting topics by reading a book about them followed by a craft activity.  Tuition:  $10.  Register on-line at 93tower.org.
     
     
    4) Getting Paid to Talk:  Introduction to Professional Voice Acting - Monday, February 12th, 6:30 - 9:00 pm, Tower Street Community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Have you ever been told you have a great voice?  Learn the basics, including how to prepare the all-important demo, how to be successful and earn a great income in this exciting field.  Hear examples of demos recorded by professional voice actors and record a commercial script under the direction of our producer!  Tuition:  $29 for one session.  Register on-line at 93tower.org.

    6) Traveling Tide Pool - Wednesday, February 28th, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Tower Street Community Center, 93 Tower Street, Westerly.  Touch tanks containing animals like starfish, sea urchins, whelks, spider crabs, oysters, as well as hermit and horseshoe crabs.  Biomes staff will educate visitors and answer questions.  FREE.

    Hello ELL Families,

     Students are working on the ACCESS testing throughout the district.  NWEA testing is also underway at Springbrook Elementary School as well as in other buildings.  Report cards will go home on Tuesday, February 13, for the elementary schools in the district.

     Midterm exams are scheduled at WHS for Thursday, January 25, and Friday, January 26.  Grades will also close on Thursday, January 25.
