COSMETOLOGY 2Instructor: Worsham, S.4 Credits each yearGrades 10, 11 and 12 (Cosmetology I, II and III)This 3-year cosmetology program offers a curriculum certified by the State of Rhode Island. Students work on theory and practical skills daily to accumulate the required 1500 hours of hands-on experience needed for certification.
Students enrolled in Cosmetology I, II and III, students develop an in-depth knowledge of Hair Cutting and Styling, Permanents, Coloring, Highlighting, Foiling, Manicuring, Pedicuring, Waxing and Artificial Nail Services. Students learn in a fully equipped classroom salon experience, firsthand, the skills needed to become an entry level cosmetologist and develop speed and proficiency as they provide services to the public. Students must maintain a C average or better to continue in the program. Prerequisite: Must pass core classes, maintain good attendance and maintain an average of 70 or better to progress to the next level of this course
Cosmetology Program at WHS The cosmetology course at Westerly High School is RIDE Certified Career and Technical Program. This CTE program is a three year program, that is designed for students interested in the cosmetology industry. The program encourages creativity both hands on and in theory. During the course of the program students will have the opportunity to learn current styles and styling techniques nail care, and skin care. At the end of student’s second year, or once 1,000 hours are accrued, the student has the opportunity to complete an internship at a salon. During this time, students will work along side a licensed cosmetologist as an apprentice. This work study placement can not be in place of classroom hours, nor are hours accrued for time in apprenticeship. At the culmination of the third year, and once 1,500 hours are accrued students may apply to take their state board examination. This examination is both written and practicum. Students must score 70% or above on their written exam to be able to take the practicum portion of the examination. Students within the Cosmetology program at Westerly High School practice both portions of the test beginning with their first year, in preparation for State Boards. Once the student is licensed as a cosmetologist, he or she may then work as a cosmetologist doing hair, nails and waxing at a salon or spa. No additional schooling is required once the requirements of 1,500 hours are met and once the State Board Examination is passed. Our "hands on" classroom is open to the public!
