    Course Description:
    In this Chemistry course, students will experience both traditional and discovery methods for investigating modern chemical concepts. Emphasis is placed on developing explanations from experimental evidence including quantitative relationships. This course provides a strong laboratory component with a focus on independent learning and scientific inquiry. 
    At WHS, chemistry is:

    Units of Study in LiveBinder

    • Units are divided by "Essential Questions"
    • Within each unit there are "Driving Questions" designed to help you gather enough info to answer essential question
    • Activity baskets, labs, practice sheets, and articles are available to help you answer the driving questions - they also provide evidence to support your conclusions about the essential questions


    • The Coversheet acts as a guide for you to organize your learning, plan your next steps in class and monitor your progress.
    • All activities, assignments, assessments, and labs are listed on "Coversheets" for each unit.
    • Due dates and expectations for completion of assignments/assessments are located on the coversheet.
    • These Coversheets are a collection of the resources you will gather to answer the Driving Questions and ultimately answer the Essential Question


    • You are developing your own notebook with data and observations gathered during activities or labs. There may also be examples or notes taken from your research.
    • There are PowerPoint notes available in the LiveBinder for each topic in the unit.
    • Topics reviewed at the beginning of class are based on your questions. These questions & answers are your notes.
    • Warm-up activities will also be given at the beginning of most classes and are designed to assist students with topics on their cover sheets. They also serve as a way to monitor progress on their cover sheets. Students are advised to copy all warm-up problems/questions into their notebooks along with the solutions after it has been reviewed. 

    The successful student of Chemistry does his/her work enthusiastically and conscientiously. This student also displays keen powers of observation, has excellent lab technique, goes beyond the minimum requirements in work, is well prepared and writes complete, thoughtful reports.   In addition, this student will exhibit an understanding of concepts and principles as well as being able to offer logical explanations for discrepancies in data. Most importantly, this student is courteous, cooperative, and respectful of others’ rights and property and is ALWAYS CHARITABLE.
    Be prepared for class:  In order to be prepared for class students must bring the following course materials to each class:

    • 1-2” 3-ring binder
    • Pen and Pencil
    • Folder
    • Scientific calculator
    • An open mind

    What do we mean by Blended Classroom, Learner-centered, Independent-, & Active-learning, center-based, spiraling curriculum?
    This will give you a brief explanation but for more on each topic:

    • Blended Classroom is one that integrates online with traditional face-to-face class activities to supplement traditional coursework with online media in the classroom.
    • Learner-centered classrooms focus primarily on individual students' learning. The teacher's role is to facilitate growth by utilizing the interests and unique needs of students as a guide for meaningful instruction. Because people learn best when they hear, see, and manipulate variables, the method by which learning occurs is often times through experimentation.
    • Independent-learning consists of a classroom with a facilitator that has set up a learning environment that largely gives the students the ability to learn on their own. This promotes responsibility of students knowing what they have to do and do it without anyone telling them and finding ways to understand material through application (generally trial-and-error).
    • Center-based or Active-Learning means that there are learning centers in the classroom designed to offer a variety of materials, activities, and media through which students can work by themselves or with others.  The information can be review or can be a way to introduce a topic, provide experiences, or review material.
    • Spiraling-curriculum is a way of acquiring knowledge where the learning is spread out over time. The curriculum is designed so the material is revisited repeatedly and used in different and more complex ways.

    There are many reasons for homework. In this class you will have some homework because:

    • You may need to gather information for your group and they are depending on you to bring that to them
    • It will help you better understand what we will be doing in class tomorrow 
    • You need to practice a concept on your own to make sure this is something that you can do independently

    Therefore, it is up to you to do homework. You will not be graded on “doing” homework.

    Product / Proficiency Summative Assessments…The evaluation of student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard(s) or benchmark(s).  (Examples: summative assessments, formal and informal lab reports, projects, presentations) 65%
    Progress Interim Assessments…The evaluation of student learning at different points within an instructional unit that measures progress toward some standard(s) or benchmark(s).  (Examples: quizzes, short writing tasks, minor presentations/performances, minor graded assignments) 35%
    Formative Some classwork will consist of formative assessments (example: “Do-Now”) which will not be “graded” but will be corrected for feedback. 0%

    Do-overs:  Assessments/Assignments

    • Students have the opportunity to “do over” ONLY four graded assignments/assessments per semester on which they scored below 80% within one week of receiving the scored assessment.
    • Students must sign the WHS SCIENCE “do over” contract (available on the “Curriculum LiveBinder”) with their teacher to clarify the procedures within two days of receiving the scored assessment/assignment.
    • The “do over” score is your final score, up to 80%.

    Academic Integrity

    • Any student(s) caught cheating or involved in cheating on any form of assessment or any other graded assignment will receive a zero on said assessment/assignment followed by contacting your parents/guardians as soon as possible.  (Please see attached outline of academic integrity)
    • WHS policies on academic integrity, which can be viewed on p. 34 of the WHS Student Handbook, will also apply.

    Laboratory Activities:  Chemistry is a lab science which will require students to apply what they have learned conceptually to a laboratory setting. 

    • Proper behavior and use of equipment is expected and enforced at ALL times (Please see the attached “Safety in the Chemistry Lab” for a complete list of expectations).  Improper or unsafe behavior will result in exclusion from the lab activity, which may only be made-up afterschool. 
    • No student may participate in laboratory activities until the “Student-Parent/Guardian Acceptance Contract” has been completed and returned.
    • Informal lab summary reports or formal lab reports are required for almost every lab exercise. One week will be given to complete formal lab reports after conclusion of lab experiments.  

    Assistance for Success:  The following are aspects of this course designed to help students achieve a level of proficiency and a passing grade in chemistry:

    • Assistance with study habits/development of good study skills.
    • One-on-one tutoring/extra help after/before school (check with teacher for availability)

    Food and Drink:  There is absolutely no food, candy or gum, nor any drinks other than water allowed in the Chemistry lab.  Please dispose of chewing gum before taking your seats in class.  Failure to comply with this policy will result in disposal of food/candy/gum/drinks.
    Absenteeism:  Regular attendance is essential for success in Chemistry class

    • If you are absent, all material can be accessed through the class LiveBinder.
    • Assessments/assignments with a due date on the day you are absent will be due upon your return to school
    • Field trips or other school related absences do not excuse you from due dates.

    Electronic Devices: 
    Electronic devices are a major part of this course. There are many computers in the room but a personal device is a great way to access material. You are, therefore, encouraged to bring your devices (tablets, smartphones) or personal computers.  These devices, however, can easily become a distraction.  If you are not using your electronic device properly or responsibly, the “Westerly Public Schools Bring Your Own Device Policy” will be followed/enforced:
    BYOD Westerly Public Schools Staff/Student Agreement
    Students and staff are encouraged to use their technology responsibly and in a manner which
    enhances teaching and learning. Privileges may be taken away if necessary. However when used
    responsibly, BYOD benefits the learning environment as a whole. Staff as well as students and
    parents/guardians participating in BYOD must agree that users will adhere to the Student Code
    of Conduct; or Staff procedures set forth WPS, respectively. Also, adhere to Westerly School
    Committee policies, particularly the Responsible Use Policy (RUP), and expectations set forth in
    Westerly Public Schools student handbooks. Additionally, for BYOD technology use:

    • All Staff, or Parents and students must agree that they have read and understand the policy.
    • Technology Devices must be in silent mode while on school campuses and while riding​ school buses.
    • Technology Devices may not be used to cheat on assignments or tests, or for non-instructional purposes (such as making personal phone calls and text/instant messaging).
    • Technology Devices may not be used without the permission of the classroom teacher.
    • This includes but is not limited to recording, transmitting or posting of either audio or​ photographic images or video of a person, or persons on campus during school activities​ and/or hours.
    • Technology Devices may only be used to access files on computer or internet sites which are relevant to the classroom curriculum. Only games educationally approved are allowed.
    • Printing from personal devices may not be possible at school.
    • Personal technology is charged prior to bringing it to school and runs off its own battery​ while at school.

    Understanding Academic Integrity
    At Westerly High School, the highest level of academic integrity is demanded.  Anything less undermines the entire educational process.  The expectations are that:

    1. All work turned in for a grade is the original work of the student receiving credit for the work.
    2. During tests, no materials can be used except for your calculator and a periodic table (or other reference sheets) provided by your teacher.

    There is often some confusion regarding the limitations on “working together”. 

    1. It is understood and expected that lab partners will communicate about the results of their lab investigations.  Please limit your discussion of your lab work to comparison of results and general ideas about the conclusions within your own lab team.  If the result of your analysis does not match that of your partner’s, you can check your own work.  If you are stuck, please ask clarifying questions.  However, you are not to do the lab report step by step with your partner or allow your lab partner to use your work in preparing his/hers.
    2. If you work together on homework, you should each do each problem and answer each question, then compare your result.  Rework problems if you do not agree.  In the end, each person has done each problem.  (If two people work together, they do not end up doing less, and may up doing – and learning – more!).

    If it is discovered that a student has violated these guidelines by possessing unauthorized materials during a test, communicating with others during a test, or turning in written work that is identical to another student’s, the following consequences will result:

    1. The grade on the test or quiz will be a zero, there will be a phone call home, and WHS rules will be followed (see student handbook).
    2. Work which is very similar to another student’s will be investigated.

    Please understand that no distinction will be made between a person who uses another’s work and the person who allows others to use his/her work.  The consequences will be the same.
    One more aspect of academic integrity is plagiarism.  You will be doing research in this class and writing.  When reporting your research, there are rules governing how this information should be reported and properly cited. 

    1. If a student has blatantly violated these rules, the grade on the writing assignment will be a zero and WHS Administration will be notified.
