  • The Chemistry of Water

The students in the Chemistry classes of Ms. Fastovsky, Mr. Hooper and Ms. Utley have been experiencing science in a different way this year.
With the support of grants awarded from The American Chemical Society and the NEA Foundation, we have been able to restructure the way we teach Chemistry.
Our units of study are THEME-BASED and promote inquiry, independence and critical thinking.  We are making the shift from developing a culture of passive "students" to one of active "learners".
One example of how our students are taking their learning outside the classroom is reflected in this photo of a snowflake.  After learning about hydrogen bonding between water molecules and how snowflakes form, this student observed this image on his coat while crossing the quad during a snow event.

Students answer the following question after researching the topic and developing a sound scientific explanation:
How does perspiration work to cool our bodies when we overheat after exercise?
Relate this phenomenon to our class discussion of changes in matter and heat energy.
Be sure to use any relevant scientific terms to develop your explanation.

  • Beach Cleanup 2009

Posted by Maryjane Utley on 11/9/2009 12:26:00 PM
On Saturday September 19, 2009, a large group of students from Westerly High School participated in the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and the RI Audubon Society.
This annual event encourages residents of seaside communities to help keep our coastlines free of litter and other debris generated by humans.
Our designated site was the beach and fishing areas surrounding the Weekapaug Breachway.
Volunteers picked up all visible trash and recorded their findings on a data collection sheet.
The information was forwarded to the RI Audubon Society where it was collated and entered into a spreadsheet.
The most common and numerous items picked up were cigarette butts. GROSS!!
Other items included old beach chairs, bottles, can, plastic bags and bottle caps.  Several years ago we found some old tires on the beach.
Students earned community service hours for their help on that day.  It truly is a service to our community.
Here is a photo of our group along with other volunteers and site coordinators Mark Burbelo and Steve Cersosimo.
