Design & Modeling: Grade 8
Instructor: Michaud, C.Pre-Engineering: Design & Modeling
The Design & Modeling courses highlight the design process and encourage students to be creative and critical thinkers as they use the principles of engineering to solve problems. As pre-engineers, students are expected to document their thinking and techniques through journaling activities and design proposals. Grading is largely determined by these portfolios and through successful completion of design challenges.Design & Modeling (Pre-Engineering II) meets three times per week for nine weeks.Key topics covered include: - 21st Century Skills Assessment Preparation
- Application of the Design Process: Towers
- Design Proposals
- Advanced Game Design and Computational Thinking

Week of April 3
This is the final week of Quarter 3. Students should complete their Pacman game design by: * Creating agents and depictions for characters * Creating the maze setting * Assigning key control, generate and absorb behaviors to Pacman, pellets and ghosts * Differentiating rules and methods * Assigning random movement to the Level One ghosts * Creating tunnels by incorporating Broadcast actions * Using simulations to track score and indicate when all pellets are removed from the maze * Diffusing a variable across the pellets and background so ghosts can chase Pacman Bonus Challenge - use the technical directions for scoring to design agents and display the score within the worksheet. This tutorial may be found at https://sgd.cs.colorado.edu/wiki/Counters_and_Timers_Tutorial in the "How Digits and Score Agents Work" section of the…

Building Big
Explore large structures and what it takes to build them with this five-part website that features tunnels, bridges, domes, skyscrapers, and dams. -
Engineering the Future: Science, Technology and the Design Process
This web resource demonstrates the different types of forces that act upon structures and how different structural shapes influence design strength and cost. The site also contains a simulation tool where designers consider budget constraints and building material properties when designing a twenty story skyscraper. -
PBS Building Big Website's Interactive Labs
Use the interactive features of the Building Big Website's Loads and Shapes labs to learn more about the forces and loads that affect structures and how shape and material choices strengthen design.

Prototype Trials Information.pdf
Information related to the prototype portion of the Design Tower challenge. The packet includes materials and size constraints, building techniques, and strength comparisons for butt and lap joints. -
safety contract.pdf
This safety contract must be signed and returned before any student can use the building materials and tools in the WMS Technology Department classes. All students will be instructed in the safe use and management of all materials and tools. -
sketch paper.pdf
Print this sketch paper template to develop ideas in the Design Your Own Tower Challenge. Show three views for each design concept and include measurements within the Notes column.
