  • Weekly Update 4/24-4/28

Welcome Back! Students look refreshed and energized and ready to conquer Quarter 4!! It is another busy week ahead.... This week in math we will continue to work on multiplication and division of fraction including on practice within word problems. Students are looking to identify key words that indicate which operation to use (multiplication or division). We will then shift toward multiplication and division of decimals. Students will be completing a mini project in school to show their understanding. An anchor chart titled, "Decimals" can be found at the bottom of this page in the folder labeled, "Anchor Charts". This is a copy of the chart your child has in their notebooks to support their learning. We will also be practicing for our upcoming PARCC assessment that will be administered in May.

  • Weekly Update 4/10-4/14

This week we will continue to multiply fractions and our focus will now be on simplifying fractions before we multiply. To see an example of this click here:  http://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/f/simplify_before_multiplying.php. We will also be introduced to division of fractions, for example something such as 1/8 divided by 4/5. We will use the language "Keep, change, flip" when attempting to solve this problem.  Report cards will go home on Thursday this week.  There will be no school on Friday, April 14th. Our school vacation is April…

  • Weekly Update 3/27-3/31

We will be wrapping up adding and subtracting mixed numbers this week. When adding mixed numbers students understand to add the whole number first, then the fraction. When subtracting mixed numbers, the number line has been a very useful tool. We continue to practice this concept and quiz at the end of this week.  Next week we will begin multiplication and division of fraction.

  • Weekly Update 3/13-3/17

This week we continue to work with fraction. Students will use the fraction model to add and subtract fractions. They will be introduced the "least common denominator (LCD) and use this to work with the algorithm to solve their equation. This week and next week students will continue to work on adding a subtracting mixed numbers as well as tackle fraction in word problems.  View the quick video on Least Common Denominator…

  • Weekly Update 3/6-3/10

This week in class we will be subtracting fractions with unlike denominators using a fraction model. We will begin with differences of fractions smaller than 1, then working our way to differences of fractions greater than 1. This allows students practice with mixed numbers. We will continue to work on simplifying our answers. Lastly, we will work on addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators in word problems.  There is no school on Friday, March…

  • Weekly Update 2/27-3/3

We will be reviewing the following concepts this week before moving to subtracting fractions: equivalent fractions, adding fractions with like denominators on the number line, creating a sum of two equal fractions and writing it as a multiplication expression, and adding fractions within word problems. Students will have examples of all of this work in their interactive notebook. This will serve as the study guide for the quiz we will have on Wednesday, March 1,…

  • Weekly Update 2/22-2/25

This week in math students will add fractions with unlike units using the strategy of creating equivalent fractions. The strategy we are using is to create a fraction model. We will be working with fractions between 0-1 (lesson 3) and fractions between 1-2 (lesson 4). At the end of the week, we will move toward subtracting fractions. Be on the lookout for the parent newsletter to accompany these…

  • Weekly Update

We will continue work in division with the partial quotient method. This week students will be dividing numbers with up to 4 digit dividends. It is an end of the year expectation that they understand and know how to do this using this method. The traditional method of long division will be instructed and emphasized in grade 6.  Order of Operations (PEMDAS) has been introduced. PEMDAS will constantly spiral throughout the curriculum from now until the end of the year. At this point, our work on PEMDAS will include daily practice using the white boards in…

  • Starfish Classroom Updates

https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=4xsyXu9J8CAWeek of January 30th: Grades close Monday, January 30th Starfish students will have a team meeting to review classroom expectations. We are expecting that all students come to class prepared and ready to learn! Student planner, pencil, homework and necessary content materials are a must! No homework means a missing assignment form is sent home and is to be signed by a parent/guardian. Students should continue to follow the PBIS expectations: Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe! Math: Students will continue to practice division using the partial quotient method. This week they will divide numbers with a 2 digit dividend. Some helpful videos can be found here:  Partial Quotient with 2 digit divisors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwNu-EfKN3c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYyJoltfqtI&t=51s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdB7kO2lcK0   Students will also learn order of operations (PEMDAS) this week. Play this catchy tune to help remember the order: https://www.youtube.com/watch/?v=4xsyXu9J8CA   A helpful video on PEMDAS can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKLh2ksYBcY&feature=share You will find the order of operations anchor chart at the bottom of this…

  • Curriculum Update

Dear Families,   This week in math our class will begin work on two week division unit. Within this unit, the students will learn how to break down increasingly large numbers using the division strategy of partial quotients.   Partial Quotients will be new to most students in grade 5. Up to this point division has been exposed to all students. Further work in division requires that the students build on their multiplication skills and fully understand the function of the division process. Students will be asked to use the partial quotient method in both classwork as well as homework. This method is different than the standard algorithm (long division) that most of us adults are familiar with. Long division will be exposed to your child toward the end of our unit, but it is not expected to be taught to mastery until the end of grade 6.   Because of this, I am providing several “parent helper” means for you to practice at home. Please have your child use only the partial quotients method at home. Practicing both methods can become extremely confusing to a student.   1. At the bottom of this webpage, I have a folders that say “Tips for Parents” and “Anchor Charts”. In these folders you will find information about partial quotients to use as a guide to help your child at home.   2. Below I have listed several videos that may better help understand the partial quotients method. Partial Quotients Video 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_Ti_7p_O9U Partial Quotients Video 2 -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWstA8EZr2w Partial Quotients Video 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeaaWdwtXkM Should you have any questions about partial quotients, as always feel free to contact me.…

  • Multiplication Practice will continue!

We have completed the first week back from vacation continuing to grow our skills with the standard algorithm for multiplying multidigit numbers. We will spend this week with continued practice. In class activities include work on whiteboards practicing the standard algorithm, partner work using an error analysis (trying to guess what "mistake" was made), and a zoo project. This work is necessary as a foundation for upcoming work with multiplication of decimals.  After multiplication, we will move into division of whole number. This work, like multiplication, will act as a foundation for work with division of fractions and decimals later on in our fifth grade…
