Weekly Update 5/85/12
Due to PARCC testing, we will be having limited math classes this week. We will continue, however, with multiplication and division of decimals using a partner project. Students will still be coming home with homework (it will be review/practice).

PARCC Testing
Grade 5 will be taking the PARCC assessment next week. Testing sessions will be Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. We will have a modified schedule for the remainder of the day after testing is complete. Please eat a healthy breakfast and get plenty of sleep to start each day off right!!!

Field Trip on Thursday!
Our field trip to the Babcock Smith house will be on Thursday, May 4th. Please come to school with a bag lunch. No glass containers allowed! Be on time for school as we will be leaving promptly at 8:45.

Weekly Update 4/244/28
Welcome Back! Students look refreshed and energized and ready to conquer Quarter 4!! It is another busy week ahead.... This week in math we will continue to work on multiplication and division of fraction including on practice within word problems. Students are looking to identify key words that indicate which operation to use (multiplication or division). We will then shift toward multiplication and division of decimals. Students will be completing a mini project in school to show their understanding. An anchor chart titled, "Decimals" can be found at the bottom of this page in the folder labeled, "Anchor Charts". This is a copy of the chart your child has in their notebooks to support their learning. We will also be practicing for our upcoming PARCC assessment that will be administered in May.

Weekly Update 4/104/14
This week we will continue to multiply fractions and our focus will now be on simplifying fractions before we multiply. To see an example of this click here: http://www.homeschoolmath.net/teaching/f/simplify_before_multiplying.php. We will also be introduced to division of fractions, for example something such as 1/8 divided by 4/5. We will use the language "Keep, change, flip" when attempting to solve this problem. Report cards will go home on Thursday this week. There will be no school on Friday, April 14th. Our school vacation is April…

Quarter closes soon!
The last day of Quarter 3 will be this Friday, April 7th. Report cards are scheduled to go home with students on Thursday, April 13th. Students will begin Quarter 4 on Monday, April 10th.

Weekly Update 4/34/7
This week we have begun multiplication of fraction. You can see our class anchor charts below (scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on anchor charts). When presented with a problem, students are encouraged to use a model to solve the problem and asked to check their work using the standard algorithm. We will continue to practice multiplying fraction in class as well as solve word problems involving multiplication of…

MATH QUIZ!
Students will have a quiz on addition and subtraction of mixed number tomorrow! Review lessons 910 in Eureka math tonight!

Weekly Update 3/273/31
We will be wrapping up adding and subtracting mixed numbers this week. When adding mixed numbers students understand to add the whole number first, then the fraction. When subtracting mixed numbers, the number line has been a very useful tool. We continue to practice this concept and quiz at the end of this week. Next week we will begin multiplication and division of fraction.

MATH QUIZ!
There will be math quiz on MONDAY, MARCH 27th. A study guide was sent home today with students. The study guide includes the "big ideas" of the topics that will be on the quiz. Students should be expected to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike units, simplify fractions, find a common denominator, and solve word problems that involve fractions.

Field Trip on Monday!
Monday March 20th we will be visiting the Garde Arts Theater. Please remember your permission slip and $10!!

Weekly Update 3/133/17
This week we continue to work with fraction. Students will use the fraction model to add and subtract fractions. They will be introduced the "least common denominator (LCD) and use this to work with the algorithm to solve their equation. This week and next week students will continue to work on adding a subtracting mixed numbers as well as tackle fraction in word problems. View the quick video on Least Common Denominator…

Weekly Update 3/63/10
This week in class we will be subtracting fractions with unlike denominators using a fraction model. We will begin with differences of fractions smaller than 1, then working our way to differences of fractions greater than 1. This allows students practice with mixed numbers. We will continue to work on simplifying our answers. Lastly, we will work on addition and subtraction of fractions with like and unlike denominators in word problems. There is no school on Friday, March…

Weekly Update 2/273/3
We will be reviewing the following concepts this week before moving to subtracting fractions: equivalent fractions, adding fractions with like denominators on the number line, creating a sum of two equal fractions and writing it as a multiplication expression, and adding fractions within word problems. Students will have examples of all of this work in their interactive notebook. This will serve as the study guide for the quiz we will have on Wednesday, March 1,…

Weekly Update 2/222/25
This week in math students will add fractions with unlike units using the strategy of creating equivalent fractions. The strategy we are using is to create a fraction model. We will be working with fractions between 01 (lesson 3) and fractions between 12 (lesson 4). At the end of the week, we will move toward subtracting fractions. Be on the lookout for the parent newsletter to accompany these…
