For instruction in this class, your child will be using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt program, System 44.System 44™ is designed for daily use by a small class (10-12 students), with students rotating between the Software and Small-Group Differentiated instruction or modeled & independent reading. The program can be used effectively during a regular class period. Students alternate between small-group differentiation and modeled/independent reading.
System 44 is a foundational reading and phonics program designed for our most challenged, struggling readers in Grades 5 - 8. Intentionally metacognitive, System 44 helps students understand that the English language is a finite system of 44 sounds and 26 letters that can be mastered. The program invites students to “crack the code” and join the community of readers, and provides educators with a comprehensive set of tools to meet this challenge:
· Validated assessment for screening and placement· Research-based phonics instruction· Highly motivating and age-appropriate adaptive technology
System 44 invites students to crack the code and master the 44 sounds and 26 letters that make up the English language.The student’s lesson consists of whole group instruction, small group instruction/modeled and independent reading and instructional software.· Whole group instruction revolves around phonics, vocabulary, word strategy, reading skills· Small group instruction/ modeled independent reading provides direct instruction and practice with the 44 Book, Decodable Digest and System 44 library. Reports and student work are used to regroup and differentiate.· Students use the System 44 software for at least twenty minutes per day. This is an individualized instruction. PARCC Parent Checklist: 5 WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD FIND OUT THE FACTS. To start, students will take the test sometime between March 7 and June 10 (check with your child’s school for exact dates) and it will be broken down into three to four units in each subject. Students will typically take one or two units on any given day. Depending on the grade level and subject, students will have up to 110 minutes to complete each unit, though many will finish in much less time. In 2014, students took a field test to determine how much time was needed to finish each section. Once that time was determined, additional time was added to ensure all students had ample time. For more information about the PARCC test, visit http://bealearninghero.org/classroom/parcc and talk to your child’s principal and teachers. TAKE A LOOK AT THE PRACTICE TEST. This will help you better understand how the test is aligned to classroom work and see the types of reading, math and writing questions your child will be answering. You may want to walk through the test with your child to help familiarize him or her with the test format and features and answer any questions. System 44 available at home for iPads
System 44 Mobile Access The System 44 app is available to all students with active program log-ins. Students may access the student software on an iPad by downloading and configuring the apps. Downloading and Configuring System 44 To download and access the app, devices must meet the following requirements: • iPad 2 or later • iOS 7 or later When these requirements are met, the app may be downloaded from the iTunes App Store. Tap the System 44 link from the Settings menu. In the SAM URL field, enter the host ID. The host ID is the number that starts with h1 followed by eight digits in the SAM Server URL: • SAM Server URL: http://h100000000.education.scholastic.com/ScholasticCentral • Host ID: h100000000 SAM Server URL information is also available from the district SAM administrator. Press the Home button to return to the iPad Home Screen. Tap the app to open it and move to the program’s login screen. Mobile Device Functionality Most programs functions identically on a workstation or mobile device, with the exception that users tap buttons and links on the user interface, rather than use a mouse or pointer as they do on workstations. Guided Access Guided Access is an iOS function that allows users to modify their device settings. Teachers and administrators may use Guided Access to control which iPad functions and buttons are enabled or disabled for student use. This may be useful for teachers with young students who may accidentally tap the iPad Home button during interactions with the Screener or Software.
