    Dear MLL Families,

    Happy St. Joseph's Day!

Reading Week start on Monday, March 22 at the elementary schools.  Please see the information below.

    READING WEEK

    March 22nd - March 26th

    Westerly Elementary Schools

Introduction: Malcolm Mitchell (former NFL Patriots player) and now the author of 2 children’s books is the inspiration for this year’s STREAM week.  “When Mitchell went to college at the University of Georgia, he quickly realized he struggled with reading.  He knew he needed to do something, so he started from scratch, reading children’s books and teaching himself to read better and faster.  He soon developed a passion for learning and literacy that ultimately changed his life.  Recognizing the transformative effects of books in his own life, Mitchell launched Read with Malcolm, a youth literacy initiative dedicated to promoting the benefits of books to students in underserved communities.”

The full article can be found here: Patriots’ Malcolm Mitchell is helping children learn to read

Monday: Teachers will read the book My Very Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World aloud to their class and discuss.  You at home can listen to the book by clicking on  the link on Youtube of Malcolm Mitchell reading his book if you don’t have the book

My Very Favorite Book - Author Read a Loud

    Tuesday - Thursday:

Goal Post S.T.E.M Activity - all students will be getting the directions and a small football.

Classroom teachers can decide if this is something they can make at home or in school. Your choice!

Build a reading fort at home. (video by Mrs. Bonner)  Students can share pictures of their creations

Community Readers’ Favorite Books: (this will be updated as all the videos are added)

Local community members have shared their favorite children’s book (or excerpt from a chapter book) and discuss why reading is important to them.

Friday: -Teachers will show the video Malcolm Mitchell | Life is Good Stories (3:23) to wrap up the week.  Remember the whole theme is Rise to the Challenge.  Overcoming adversity and knowing the importance of reading is his message.  Take the opportunity to have conversations about this.   Classrooms can discuss or show each other, their very favorite book in the whole wide world!  Celebrate!!

RICAS is coming up too.  Please read the letters that have been sent home with your children and are posted in the teachers' Google Classrooms.  Students in grades 3, 4, 5, and 8 will be tested.

    Have a great weekend!-Ms. Melillo
